Miet Warlop in Brussels

Hi there! Of course, I’m already starting my weeknotes with a half-week delay. But oh well! I still want to document what happened last week, especially the weekend.

After a busy week of work, we took a bus to Brussels on Friday to spend the weekend there. The highlights were WIELS, the centre for contemporary art in Brussels, and a performance we attended in the evening.

The exhibition currently on view at WIELS wasn’t particularly interesting to me, but I was captivated by the architecture of the former brewery building and the rooftop terrace. There’s also something inherently calming and slowing-down about visiting a museum that I always appreciate.

The evening performance at Ancienne Belgique was much more exciting. We could forget about our front-row seats, though. The venue was so crowded that people were standing directly in front of us. To see anything at all, we had to stand up as well.

The piece, One Song by Miet Warlop, was an intense and fascinating blend of concert and athletic performance. Imagine a group of people playing a single, continuous song for an entire hour while simultaneously engaging in strenuous physical activity. The audience (and we included) loved it.
